It’s past time our community had transport that’s accessible for everyone.
The Victorian state government was legally bound to make all tram stops fully accessible by the end of 2022. But that deadline has long passed, and a fully accessible tram network is still a long way off.
On Sydney Road alone, there are currently no accessible tram stops at all for 5.5 kilometres, stretching from Brunswick Road in Brunswick East all the way to Bakers Road in Coburg North.
For passengers with accessibility requirements, like people with a disability, parents with prams, elderly people, and anyone with temporary and permanent mobility restrictions, or even a heavy suitcase – if you live or travel anywhere along this long stretch of road, right now you’re being left behind.
The Government have recently announced “planning” for accessible tram stops on Sydney Road, but as we’ve seen with their promises for Gertrude & Smith Street, it doesn’t necessarily mean action.
It’s time this Government did more than empty promises, and actually commits to accessible public transport for all.
