For years, the Victorian Government has underfunded Neighbourhood Houses – vital community services that are now being pushed to the brink.

Neighbourhood Houses are places where communities connect, where people learn, and where those in need find a helping hand. 

But there has been a chronic underinvestment in community services, and we’re now seeing dire consequences:

• Almost half of all Neighbourhood Houses have been running at a loss for the past two years.
• Four Neighbourhood Houses have already closed their doors permanently due to insolvency.
• Many more are cutting back their opening hours, reducing vital services when our communities need them most.

This isn’t because communities don’t care, it’s because this Labor Government has stopped investing in them.

With over 185,000 visitors each week, providing 2,900 tonnes of food relief, and running 426,000 activity sessions, Neighbourhood Houses are pillars of the community, and must be invested in.

We’re calling on the Minister for Carers and Volunteers to take action and increase funding for Neighbourhood Houses by 25%. This will ensure Neighbourhood Houses can not only pay their staff, but cover the basic costs of keeping the lights on – and keeping their doors open for everyone.
